 Sri Lanka would do its utmost to convince the international community that she has done enough to implement the recommendations of the LLRC report as demanded by them and was confident that Sri Lanka would emerge unscathed from the upcoming annual UNHRC debate in Geneva, Plantation Industries Minister Mahinda Samarasingha said.
Minister Samarasingha who acts as the international trouble shooter of the government told the Daily Mirror on the eve of his departure for Geneva yesterday that Sri Lanka has engaged with a several friendly countries in many parts of the world on a diplomatic level explaining her position.
He said Sri Lanka has a strategic plan to face the possible brickbats at the UNHRC debate but declined to elaborate.
It was speculated that the EU with the backing of the US are expected to pass a resolution at the UNHRC meeting urging Sri Lanka to come up with a credible mechanism to implement LLRC recommendations without delay. (source:Daily mirror)
Other members of the delegation are Ministers Nimal Siripala De Silva, Anura Priyadharshana Yapa, Parliamentarian Sajin Vas Gunawardana and former AG Mohan Peiris.
The Sri Lanka delegation was to leave for Geneva on February 20, 2012

 Minister Champika Ranawaka says he will cut down on his fuel allowance by 10% and has also instructed officials of the Power and Energy Ministry including the Secretary to do same, to set an example on behalf of the ministry.
Pointing out that everybody, big or small, should do their part maintain the country’s economic stability, Ranawaka stressed that the Ministry of Power and Energy should also commit for this purpose.
Asserting that he would also contribute to this the Minister instructed the secretary and other officials of the Ministry to take measures to reduce their fuel allowances by 10%, a press release issued today stated.
During a meeting today the Minister of Power and Energy informed the relevant officials to also take necessary measures reduce the fuel and electricity costs of the entire ministry by 10 % as well as cut down the ministry’s annual costs by 10%(source:Adaderana)

| Bread prices to increase by Rs. 5 |
|
|
|
 All Ceylon Bakery Owners’ Association President N.K. Jayawardena said if they don’t reach an understanding with the Government by this week they will increase their prices by at least Rs. 5.
“If we don’t meet with the Government and the Ministers and if they cannot give us a tax concession then we will be forced to increase the price by at least Rs. 5,” Mr. Jayawardena said.
The association is trying to meet the Minister of Trade in this regard and the failure to remove a tax on bread Mr. Jayawardena warned would result in an increase in bread prices definitely by this Friday.

| Kerosene subsidies effective from today |
|
|
|
 The government has decided to provide a kerosene subsidy starting from today as a remedy to the difficulties faced by the public after the price of kerosene increased by Rs. 35.
Therefore every family without electricity facility will be granted a kerosene subsidy of Rs. 200 per month while this relief is to be provided to around 500, 000 families living in rural areas including estate worker families.
The government estimates that this would cost nearly Rs. 80 million per month.
Samurdhi receivers and those who do not receive Samurdhi benefits can receive this subsidy by obtaining a Grama Niladhari Certificate through Samurdhi development officials.
The Samurdhi Commissioner General Department says this program will be carried out through all divisional secretariats.

| Colombo Outer Circle Highway construction starts today |
|
|
|
 The Ministry of Highways will commence construction of the second phase of the Colombo Outer Circular Highway at an estimated cost of a staggering Rs.44.8 billion from Kaduwela to Kadawatha today, the Ministry said.
The construction of the road would take place under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa who holds the Highways Ministry portfolio.
The construction of the 8.9 kilometre road is the second phase of the three-part road project which is 29.1 kilometres long. The Colombo Outer Circular Highway extends from Kottawa through the Homagama, Kuduwela, Biyagama, Mahara and Wattala divisional secretariat areas up to Kerawalapitiya.
Ministry sources said the Colombo Outer Circular Highway will directly connect to the proposed Colombo-Kandy expressway at Kadawatha as well as the Colombo-Katunayake expressway at Kerawalapitiya.
The first phase of the Colombo Outer Circular Highway from Kottawa to Kaduwela which will be 11 kilometres, is estimated to cost Rs.24.9 billion.
The Colombo Outer-Circular Highway will avoid road traffic congestion and create more convenience for the people travelling outside Colombo city limits as they would use the alternate routes instead, sources said.

Prominent cricketing personality Ranil Abeynaike passed away this morning. A product of S. Thomas College Mt. Lavinia, he played for the 1st XI team with distinction and captained the college in the mid seventies and subsequently took over as head coach of the Thomian team which won the Royal Thomian.
Fishermen in Chilaw and Negombo areas have decided to resume fishing activities from tomorrow following discussions held with Deputy Minister Sarath Kumara Gunaratne and government representatives.
